Research Note James' parents were William Reid & Janet Clark [determined from the naming pattern of his children & from fellow researcher Louise Connolly]. William & Janet's children, born in Glasgow were: George (1802-1882), Elizabeth (1805-1885), Margaret (1807-1889), and James (1810-1877). William died in 1829, leaving a will (scotlands people: William Reid, printer, husband of Janet Clark). 
MarriageHe married Mary Graham, daughter of James Graham and Margaret Paterson.1
 
1841 CensusJames Reid appeared on the 1841 Census of Barony, Lanarkshire, at Buccleugh Street. James was age 30, a Backer [sic], and born in Lanarkshire. In the household were his son William (4) as well as two female servants. Wife Mary and daughter Margaret were enumerated at Mary's father's house at Cloverbank in Glasgow.3 
(Trustee & Executor) WillHe was named a trustee and executor in the will of his wife's uncle William Graham dated 19 Oct 1848. He was recorded as James Reid Secretary to the Union Bank of Scotland Glasgow.4 
1851 CensusJames and Mary Reid appeared on the 1851 Census of Glasgow, Lanarkshire, at 105 Virginia Street. James was 40, a Banker, and born in Glasgow. Mary was 41, a Bankers Wife and born in Glasgow. Their children were Janet Clark (7) and James Graham (2). Also in the household were visitor Mary Campbell (unmarried, 37, annuitant, born in Tarbolton, Ayr) and 3 house servants.5 
(Inventory) ProbateJames Reid gave up the inventory of the estate of William Graham on 21 Apr 1856.4 
(Executor) WillJames Reid was named an executor in the will of his wife's uncle John Graham dated 14 Jan 1858 in Stirling. He was described as James Reid, Banker in Glasgow.6 
1861 CensusJames and Mary appeared on the 1861 Census of Glasgow, Lanarkshire, at 23 Blythswood Square. James was a banker, age 50, born in Glasgow. Mary was 51 and born in Kilpatrick Stirlingshire [sic]. Their children were William (24, engraver), Janet C (17), Elizabeth (9, scholar), Thomas G (7, scholar). They had two domestic servants.7 
(Executor) ProbateJames Reid was named an executor of the estate of Margaret Graham in Dec 1866. He was recorded as brother in law James Reid, Cashier of the Union Bank of Scotland, Glasgow.8 
1871 CensusJames and Mary appeared on the 1871 Census of Glasgow, Lanarkshire, at 23 Blythswood Square. James was 60, a banker, and born in Glasgow. Mary was 61 and also born in Glasgow. With them were William (33, bankers son), James Graham (22, lens apprentice), Elizabeth (19), and Thomas Graham (16, scholar), as well as two domestic servants.9 
OccupationJames Reid was a secretary of the Union Bank of Scotland, who built Dunmullin. He also served a period as the Treasurer of the Royal Philosophical Society of Glasgow and was described as a respected townsman.1,10 
DeathJames died on 22 Aug 1877 in Dunmullin.1,11
 
ProbateHis estate was proved on 26 Sep 1877 in Stirling Sheriff Court. The index entry reads: James Reid, of Dunmullin, Parish of Strathblane, County of Stirling, died 22/08/1877 at Dunmullin aforesaid, testate.11
