1851 CensusJames M Gowan [sic] appeared on the 1851 Census of Laurencekirk, Kincardineshire, at Manse. He was the Minister of Laurencekirk, age 44, and born in Kilmadock. His children were Robert (8), James (3), Jane (9 months). They also had 3 house servants and a lodger who was a teacher. Isabella and John and Ann were at Isabella's father's house in Barony, Lanarkshire.3 
1861 CensusJames appeared on the 1861 Census of Laurencekirk, Kincardineshire, at E C Manse. Isabella was not enumerated with the family. James was 54, the minister of Laurencekirk parish, and born in Kilmadock. The children were James G (13), Jane (10), and Isabella J (4). They had two domestic servants.4 
1871 CensusJames McGowan appeared on the 1871 Census of Laurencekirk, Kincardineshire, at the Manse. James was 64, born in Kilmadock, and the Minister of Laurencekirk Parish. One child, Isabella J (14) was at home and they had a cook and a housemaid.5 
DeathJames died on 27 May 1872.1

He marr. 29th June 1841, Isabella Davidson (died 10th Oct. 1894), daugh. of John Stuart, Lennoxbank, and had issue - Robert, born 18th May 1842; John Stuart 10 Jan 1844; Ann Arthur Semple 15 Feb 1846; James George, managing director of Bedford Petroleum Company, Paris, born 13 Dec 1847; Jane 5 June 1850, died 4 April 1867; Isabella Jessie 12 June 1856.1
