BirthDonald Alexander Kyle was born on 18 Mar 1894 in Tay Terrace, Broughty Ferry, Forfar.
Details from the certificate: Donald Alexander Kyle, born at 8:50 pm, father Thomas Kyle, civil engineer, mother Isabella Kyle maiden surname Kinross, parents married 29 March 1893 in Clackmannan, registered by the father, who was present, on April 3rd.2 
(with Parents) 1901 CensusDonald Alexr appeared on the 1901 Census of Ferry Port on Craig, Fife with his parents. He was 7 years old, a scholar, and born in Broughty Ferry.3 
Passenger ListHe was on an passenger arrival list dated 31 Mar 1911 for the SS Empress of Ireland, arriving in St John, New Brunswick. He was recorded as 17 years old, a farm labourer, Presbyterian, and headed for Sedgewick, Alberta on the CPR. He was on the same ship as his maternal uncle James Stirling Kinross and family who were also headed to Sedgewick.4 
Land Record Donald A Kyle was listed in the Alberta Homestead Records Index at Section 24, Township 83, Range 25, Meridian 5. He is not recorded in the Library and Archives Canada index of those who obtained a final homestead patent so perhaps he did not complete the process.5 
CEFHe volunteered for the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 25 Mar 1916 at Peace River, Alberta. The attestation papers included the following information: Donald Alexander Kyle, residence Peace River Crossing, born 18 March 1894 at Tayport Fife Scotland, next-of-kin father Thomas Kyle of Tayside House, Tayport. Donald was a farmer & piper, unmarried, height 5 ft 5 3/4 inches, chest 34, 38 expanded, medium complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair, and he was Presbyterian.1

MilitaryHe was mentioned in the war diary of his battalion. on 15 Aug 1917. The entry read:


No. 904852. Private Donald Alexander KYLE.
On 15/8/17 on HILL70, when acting as a company runner and guide, after the capture and consolidation of the final objective of the Battalion, he immediately went out located the wounded, marking their location, afterwards guiding the stretcher-bearers to them. He worked incessantly for 24 hours under unceasing shell fire.
On 16/8/17 in the attack on the CHALK PIT, he carried on in a fearless manner and although greatly exhausted, continued to consolidate and man the position until relieved.6
 
MilitaryDonald Alex Kyle was on a ship carrying returning soldiers of Unit 13, Quebec Regiment or Corps from Bramshott Camp in Hampshire to Montreal in spring 1919. His original unit was 194, next of kin his mother, religion Presbyterian, and residence Peace River Crossing.4 
MarriageHe married Marguerite (-?-).7
 
1921 CensusDonald and Marguerite Kyle appeared on the 1921 Census of Melberta Municipal District, Alberta, at Section 22 Township 52 Range 8 W4. They owned their 3 room wood house. Donald was 37, born in Scotland, immigrated in 1912, Presbyterian, and was a Farmer working on his own farm. Marguerite was 18, born in Manitoba, parents born in Scotland.8 
Note."Years later, it was quite common to hear a certain Mr. Donald Kyle play the bagpipes in the McLeods yard in the evenings."9 
Newspaper Published 17 Jan 1962 in the Edmonton Journal. Notice of a Scottish Concert to be presented in Jasper, Alberta. The program included pipers, including boys who were being instructed by Donald Kyle.10 
Research Note A few years ago, a query about a piping competition in Coeur d'Alene and this photograph were posted on a bagpipe forum by Donald Alexander Kyle's granddaughter. Unfortunately, the email address no longer works and I have been unable to contact her.11

Note.On April 6, 1981, a party was held at the Crystal Springs Hotel in Camrose to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 1911 CPR land party. Fourteen of the 24 known survivors attended, one of whom was named Donald Kyle.12

Research Note There is an obituary for a Donald Kyle in the Edmonton Journal on 28 Dec 1970. I got a copy and it is not for this family. There is also an obituary in the Edmonton Journal 26 April 2006 for a Donald Kinross Kyle. He turned out to be Donald Alexander's son. [index source: Obituary Daily Times & The Recents]
