Very little is known of her life, that portion when she was married to William Stirling being recorded under his name.

From her Marriage Certificate Elizabeth Lewis' year of birth was established as about 1851.

A search of the St. Catherine's Indexes for her birth was abandoned when twenty four births, of infants named Elizabeth Lewis, were found to be registered in the first quarterly Index checked, for January to March 1849.

She was later found in the 1861 Census for Swansea, with her parents and sisters. This gave her place of birth as well as that of her parents and sisters.

Some fifteen years or more after the initial searches, which were carried out on Merseyside, Elizabeth and her two children were identified in the 1891 Census. She was the married head of the household, aged 40 and born in Swansea, Glamorganshire. Living with her were her two children, Mary E Stirling who was a 10 year old scholar born in Birkenhead and William J Stirling, a 6 year old scholar also born in Birkenhead.

A death for Elizabeth Stirling aged 46 was recorded in Birkenhead in 1901.
