A Notorious Character.
At the Epsom petty Session on Monday, Maria Stredwick, of no fixed abode, was summoned for damaging a quantity of straw, value 1s., the property of Francis Maxwell Thomson, of Cannon Court Farm, Fetcham. The evidence was to the effect that defendant was found sleeping in a barn at Cannon Court Farm at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, and on Mr Thompson being informed, he gave her into custody, as he had previously cautioned her to stop the practice of sleeping in his barn. Inspector Hatton said he was continually receiving complaints about defendant. her parents were respectable people, but she preferred living the life of a prostitute. She was fined a short time ago for travelling on the railway without having paid her fare. Defendant stated that if she had not slept in the barn she would have had to walk about the streets all night. The Bench inflicted a fine of 2s. 6d., and ordered defendant to pay the damage.7
