Agnes was 25 and born in Mahamston [sic], Stirlingshire. Also in the household were their daughter Elizabeth M (1), John's sister Marion (18) and three boarders.5

1871 CensusJohn and Agness appeared on the 1871 Census of Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, at 43 Rye Hill Street. John was age 34, a Gas Engineer born in Dumblane, Scotland. Agness was 38 and born in Stirlingshire, Scotland. They had two children, Elizabeth (11, birthplace Glasgow), William A (6, Islington) as well as one servant.7 
1881 CensusJohn and Agnes appeared on the 1881 Census of Ockbrook, Derbyshire, at Church Street "Ockbrook House". John was 44, a Gas Engineer, Midland Ry, and was born in Dunblane, Scotland. Agnes was 46 and born in Falkirk, Scotland. Their children were Lizzie (21) and William A (16). They had a visitor Herbert E Jones who was an engineer with the railway [Elizabeth's future husband], as well as one general servant.8 
DeathJohn died on 12 Jul 1890 in 89 Lloyd Street, Greenheys, Manchester, Lancashire.
Information from register: male, age 53, Colour Manufacturer, died suddenly from congestion of the lungs due to excessive drinking, inquest held 14 July 1890, registered 15 July.9
