John was 40, born May 1860 in Illinois, parents born Illinois, a Coal Miner out of work 4 months that year, unable to read or write, and rented his home. Melissa was 40, born May 1860 in Illinois, father born Illinois, mother Tennessee, could read and write, and was the mother of 7 children, 5 still living. They had married 22 years. With them were children Walter (16), Binis (13), Fifer (11), Levi H (6), and Daisy (3).2 
1910 CensusJ W and Mallisa F Chapell appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Lively Grove Township, Washington County, Illinois, enumerated 28 Apr 1910. J W was 50, born in Illinois as were his parents, a coal miner, out of work 16 weeks that year, unable to read and write. Mallisa was 50, born in Illinois, father born in Pennsylvania and mother in Tennessee. They had been married 31 years, first marriage for both, and they rented their home. Mallisa was the mother of 8 children, 5 still living. At home were Binis (23, coal miner out of work 28 weeks, could not read and write), Fifer (21, coal miner out of work 16 weeks), Liva H [sic] (16, coal miner), Daisy (13), and Emma L (9). Also there was their widowed son-in-law Tom Collince[sic], (40, coal miner out of work 16 weeks) and his children Daisy L (9) and George W (5). None of the children attended school.6 
1920 CensusWesley and Melissa Chapple appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Tilden, Randolph County, Illinois, enumerated 7 Jan 1920. They owned their home with a mortgage. Wesley was 59, born in Illinois, and was a coal miner. Melissa was 59 and born in Illinois, parents in Tennessee. Their daughter Emma (18) was with them and the next household was their son Harry, his wife Goldie and their son Raymond.7 
1930 CensusJohn W and Malissa Chappell appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Tilden, Randolph County, Illinois. They owned their home worth $600 and did not have a radio set. John was 70, born in Illinois, parents in Pennsylvania, and was a coal miner, currently working. Malissa was 69, born in Illinois as were her parents. They were both first married at 19. No one else was in the household.8 
DeathMelissa died on 22 Oct 1939 in Tilden, Randolph County, Illinois.
