Military | The 20th Tennessee Infantry Regiment information included the following: Keen, Lemuel (1819 - 1899) - Son of John & Sarah (Wells) Keen was listed as deserted at Gainesboro, Tennessee on February 18, 1862 during retreat from the Battle of Fishing Creek, Kentucky. He returned to the regiment. It is believed that he fled to Illinois late in the war and joined the U.S. Army, Company G, 23rd (Consolidated) Infantry. His residence was listed as Pickneyville, Illinois. Mustered into service on March 14, 1865 and mustered out of service on May 30, 1865.3 |

Military | Lemuel Keene joined the 23rd IL US Infantry on 14 Mar 1865. He was with Company G. Lemuel was a private, signed up by Cpt Eustace for a period of 1 year. He was mustered in on 14 March 1865 at Dixon, Illinois and mustered out 30 May 1865 at Camp Lee, Virginia by Lt Ladd, under order of War Dept May 3, 1865.

Sarah was 41, Keeping house, and born in Illinois. In the household were George L (21, day laborer), Emily (19, domestic servant), Mary J (15), Sarah E (13), Martha (8), and Lemuel (2), all surnamed Keen and born in Tennessee. Also there were two Goforth children born in Illinois, William (14) and John (12).
Lemuel could read and write but Sarah and most of the children could not. Only William Goforth attended school.10 |
