Research Note In the 1850 census, Maston was with John Keen in Perry County, Illinois. Relationships were not recorded in the 1850 and I initially assumed that Maston was John's son. However, Maston was not named in the administration of John's estate so is perhaps a nephew.

(Other) 1850 CensusMaston appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Perry County, Illinois, in the household of John Keen. Maston was 14 and born in Tennessee.1
MarriageMaston Keen married Elizabeth Carey on 17 Sep 1857 in Randolph County, Illinois.2,3
 
1860 CensusMaston and Elizabeth Keen appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Township 5 Range 3 West, Perry County, Illinois, enumerated 2 Jul 1860. Maston was 23, Farming, had personal estate of $200, and was born in Tennessee. Elizabeth was 22 and born in Illinois. They had a daughter, Martha A, age 2 months. Neither of them could read or write.4 
MilitaryMaston Keen joined the 110 IL US Infantry on 15 Aug 1862 in Perry County. He was with Company H which consolidated with Company D. Maston was a private, signed up by Cpt Murphy for a period of 3 years. He was mustered in on 11 September 1862 at Camp Anna, Illinois and mustered out 8 June 1865 at Washington, DC by Lt Scruggs.

Personal characteristics noted were: residence Perry County, age 24, height 5' 6 1/2", light hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, married, farmer, nativity Sumner County, Tennessee.5 
Research Note He was not with his wife and daughters in the 1870 census.
