Newspaper | Published 21 Sep 1954 in the [Melbourne] Argus. Tank Burst but No Fire Horsham, Monday An eyewitness to yesterday's fatal plane crash at Minyip said today that he was amazed the plane did not catch fire, although the petrol tank had burst. He is Mr Austin Miller, managing director of Super Spread Pty, Ltd, the aerial crop dusting firm which owned and operated the plane. Mr Miller and a Minyip resident, Mr Frank Deacon, were among a group watching the plane at the time of the crash, shortly before 1 pm yesterday. They were the first to reach it after running across a rough ploughed paddock. But they could do nothing for the pilot, 25-year-old Douglas McCutcheon, of Penola, South Australia, who died instantly. Mr Miller said McCutcheon had just finished spraying the 70-acre crop on Milgate's property. He had pulled up and started a turn when the aircraft stalled and plunged to the ground. The plane was between 8 to 100 feet up and was travelling at more than 85 mph, Mr Miller said. McCutcheon was an experienced pilot with more than 700 hours on light aircraft flying.3 |
Newspaper | Published 23 Sep 1954 in the [Adelaide] Chronicle. Penola Pilot Dies In Plane Crash Melbourne.--Douglad McCutcheon, 25, of Penola, SA, was killed instantly on Sunday when the Tiger Moth plane he was piloting crashed in a farm paddock near the Wimmera township of Minyip, 197 miles north-west of Melbourne. Police did not release his name until his next-kin had been notified. The crashed plane was one of two which were spraying wheat crops on the property of Mr H Milgate with weed killer. Mr Milgate said that his two sons, Ken and Ronald, were standing in a nearby paddock when the plane crashed. They said the aircraft had finished its work and was heading back to the refuelling site. It appeared to bank sharply at a low height, and then nose-dived into the ground. The planes had been in the district for several days, and had sprayed thousands of acres of crops without incident.4 |
