There were also one male and one female servant.3 
1851 CensusJames Bain and Helen McNicol appeared on the 1851 Census of Muthill, Perthshire, at Duchlowan. James was 63, a Farmer of 8 acres employing 4 labourers, and was born in Muthill. Helen was enumerated as Helen McNicol, age 47, and born in Muthill. Their children were John (21), James (20), William (13), Robert (11), Helen (9), and Catherine (6). The first two were farmer's sons and the rest were scholars. They also had a 15-year-old local house servant.2
