1881 CensusDavid appeared on the 1881 Census of Alloa, Clackmannanshire, with his widowed mother at Erskine Street. He was age 24, born in Clackmannan, and a General Labourer.3 
1891 CensusHe appeared on the 1891 Census of Dunblane, Perthshire, at Kippenrait. He was age 32, unmarried, employed as a Grocer's Vanman, born in Clackmannan. He was a visitor to Marion Roberts [shortly to be his mother-in-law].4 
MarriageHe married Elizabeth Paterson Roberts, daughter of John Roberts and Marion Paterson Reid, on 10 Apr 1891 in Kippenrait, Dunblane, Perthshire.

They were married after banns according to the Church of Scotland by Alexander Ritchie, Minister of Dunblane Parish, and the witnesses were Agnes Robertson and William Monteath Stirling.1 
1901 CensusDavid and Lizzie appeared on the 1901 Census of Alloa, Clackmannanshire, at 1 Jamaica St. David was employed as a Bread Vanman, age 41, and born in Clackmannan, Clackmannan. Lizzie was 29 and born in Glasgow. With them were their children Marion (9) and John (4), as well as visitor John Miller and two boarders. Their house had four rooms with windows.5 
DeathDavid died on 11 Feb 1910 in 1 Jamaica Street, Alloa, Clackmannanshire.
Details from certificate: Vanman, married to Elizabeth Roberts, age 56, son of William Monteath, Joiner, deceased & [blank] Monteith maiden surname McLean deceased, cause of death Pneumonia Syncope, certified. The informant was Archibald Stirling, Nephew, 22 Hill Street Alloa. Registered Feb 11.6
