They were married after banns by Alexr Cumming, Minister of East Gorbals Free Church and the witnesses were Robert McIntyre and James Thomson.1 
1871 CensusJames and Jane Stewart appeared on the 1871 Census of Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, at Main Street W. James was 37, a Mason, and born in Kilmadock. Jane was 36 and born in Invergeldie [sic], Perthshire. Their children were Elizth (12), Duncan (9), William (7), Jane (5), Mary (2).3 
(Informant) DeathJames Stewart registered the 1880 death of Duncan Stewart. He was recorded as father Jas Stewart, present.4 
1881 CensusJames and Jane appeared on the 1881 Census of Govan, Lanarkshire, at 80 S Wellington Street. James was an Inspector of Buildings, age 47, birthplace Doune. Jane was 46, birthplace Comrie. With them were their children Elizabeth (22, machinist), William (17, clerk messenger at arms), Jane (15, dressmaker), Mary (12, scholar), Ellen (9, scholar), Margaret (4), and a visitor (Kate Jackson, 12). The youngest, Margaret, was born in Glasgow and the rest in Doune.5 
DeathJames died on 11 Feb 1885 in 226 Crown Street, Glasgow, Lanarkshire.
Information from registration: Mason Journeyman, married to Jane Reid, age 50, son of Duncan Stewart, Shepherd (deceased) & Elizabeth Stewart maiden surname Campbell; died of nephritis, duration 1 month, 8 days; informant was his daughter Elizabeth Stewart.6
