MarriageHe married Matilda Jack, daughter of Archibald Jack, on 13 Aug 1837 in Muthill.2
 
Research Note This family was not in the 1841 Muthill census. 
1851 CensusWilliam and Matilda appeared on the 1851 Census of Muthill, Perthshire, at Gunnocks. William was 40 years old, a Farmer of 60 acres employing 4 labourers, and was born in Muthill. Matilda was 39 and born in Muthill. Their children were Hannah (12) and James (7). Also there were Matilda's father Archibald Jack, 2 house servants, a farm servant, and a lodger.3 
(Informant) DeathWilliam McNicol registered the 1858 death of his sister Helen McNicol.4 
1861 CensusWilliam and Matilda appeared on the 1861 Census of Muthill, Perthshire, at Gunnocks. William was 50, a farmer of 70 acres, and born in Ardoch. Matilda was 49 and also born in Ardoch. With them were their son James (16, lawyer's clerk), a ploughman, two domestic servants, and an agricultural labourer.5 
MarriageWilliam McNicol married Margaret Eadie on 13 Jul 1866 in Dunblane, Perthshire.6
 
1871 CensusWilliam and Margaret Mcnicol appeared on the 1871 Census of Ardoch, Perthshire, at Gunnocks. William was a farmer of 73 acres arable, employing one man, one woman, and one boy, age 58, birthplace Ardoch. Margaret was 42 and born in St Ninians. With them was William's son James (24, unemployed clerk), their daughter Margaret (3), and three farm servants.7
