BirthJames Graham was born on 22 Aug 1776 in Wester Cullings, Dunblane, Perthshire.
The surname was recorded as "Grame."1 
MarriageHe married Margaret Paterson on 11 Oct 1802 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire.3,4
 
(Surety) ProbateJames Graham was a cautioner for his uncle James Graham's estate on 15 Nov 1821. He was described as James Graham, Manufacturer of Glasgow.5 
(Heir) WillJames Graham was named an heir in the will of his father Thomas Graham dated 6 Oct 1825. See Thomas' page for details.6 
Note.James paid in cash at an 1835 judicial sale in Edinburgh for the lands of Ballewan in Strathblane.4 
Note.The 1845 Statistical Account of Scotland noted that "Strathallan parish abounds with perennial springs and that the only known mineral spring is in the farm yard of Ballewan. The water resembles the Spa."7 
OccupationJames was a manufacturer of light fabrics, adapted to the climate of the West Indies, to which he exported them direct. He had been successful in this enterprise, and was then carrying on a prosperous business, though as yet he could not be called a rich man.8  
DirectoryJames Graham was listed in the 1841 Glasgow directory as Graham, James, of Ballewan, manufacturer, 86 Hutcheson st., house Cloverbank, Garngadhill.9 
1841 CensusHe appeared on the 1841 Census of Glasgow, Lanarkshire, at Cloverbank, enumerated 6 Jun 1841. James was 60, Independent, and not born in the county. With him were his daughters Margaret (35) and Mary (35), his granddaughter [Mary's daughter] Margaret Reid (6), as well as 2 female servants. [Note: adult ages were rounded down in the 1841 census].10 
DeathJames died in 1842.4
 
ProbateHis inventory was recorded on 25 Oct 1842 in Glasgow Sheriff Court. The index reads 'James Graham Esq., of Ballewen, manufacturer at Glasgow and latterly residing in Cloverbank'. James died intestate and the majority of his estate passed to his eldest son Thomas.11,8
