Note. | She was bequeathed £55 from cousin Robert Stirling of Leek in his will dated 7 Aug 1838. One segment of the lengthy will pertained 'To family of my Aunt Elizabeth Graham the sister of my late mother' and said 'To Elizabeth the wife of John Smart of Saint Ninian's, Tanner, late Elizabeth Graham spinster, the sum of £55.2' |
1841 Census | John and Elizth Smart appeared on the 1841 Census of St Ninians, Stirlingshire. John was 65, a Tanner, and was born in Stirlingshire. Elizth was 45 and also born in the county. The children included Eliza (20), Thomas (15, j'man ironmonger), Walter (15, skinner), Agnes (15), and Janet (4). They had one female servant. [Note: ages were rounded down in the 1841 census].5 |
1851 Census | Elizabeth Smart appeared on the 1851 Census of Edinburgh St Cuthberts, Midlothian, at 41 Lothian Street. She was 60, born in Dunblane, a widow, and supported by family. With her were her children Elizabeth (31, milliner & dressmaker), Thomas (29, ironmongers assistant), Agnes (25, milliner & dressmaker), and Janet (14, scholar) and her sister Janet Allison (married, annuitant).6 |
1861 Census | Eliza Smart appeared on the 1861 Census of Edinburgh, Midlothian, at 6 Brighton Street. She was 70, a householder, birthplace Cromle [likely Cromlix] Perthshire. Her children at home were Eliza (40), Agnes (34), and Janet (21), all dressmakers. They had two lodgers who were veterinary students.7 |
1871 Census | Elizabeth appeared on the 1871 Census of Edinburgh, Midlothian, at 6 Brighton Street. She was 79, a house holder, and born in Perthshire. With her were Eliza (51), Thomas (49), Agnes (46), and Janet (34). Thomas was an ironmonger and his sisters were dressmakers.8 |
