1871 CensusJames and Jane appeared on the 1871 Census of Lambeth, Surrey, at 9 Granbys Buildings, enumerated 2 Apr 1871. Their name was recorded as "Paste". James was 28, a Cab Driver born in Marybone Middlesex. Jane was 29, a Waitress, and born in Lambeth. They had one daughter, Ellen, age four. Jane's parents and several siblings lived nearby at 5 Granbys Buildings.2 
1881 CensusJames and Jane Pace appeared on the 1881 Census of Lambeth, Surrey, at 5 Granbys Buildings, enumerated 3 Apr 1881. Several families were at this address: the Paces, Jane's parents, her sister Mary's family, and William & Sarah Webb. James Pace was age 44, a Cabman, and born in Lambeth. Jane was 38 and born in Surrey. They had one daughter, Ellen, age 13.1 
1891 CensusJames and Jane Pace appeared on the 1891 Census of Lambeth, London, at 28 Conroy St. James was 53, employed as a Cab Driver, and was born in Marylebone. Jane was 48 and born in Lambeth. They had one daughter, Ellen, a bookfolder, age 23, as well as a visitor Henry Curzon (11, born in London), and a lodger.4 
1901 CensusJames and Jane appeared on the 1901 Census of St George Hanover Square, Westminster, London, at 25 Aylesford St. James was 64, worked as a Church & window cleaner & assistant verger, and was born in Marylebone. Jane was 58 and born in Lambeth. There were five households at this address; James & Jane lived in one room.5 
1911 CensusJames and Jane appeared on the 1911 Census of London, at 29 Aylesford Street. James was 73, occupation Old Age Pensioner, and born in Marylebone. Jane was 68 and born in Lambeth. They had been married 48 years and did not answer the question about children. They lived in one room and the form was filled out for them by A. Douning.6
