Eliza grew up in the farming community of Harlow, Essex. She had six siblings and her father was an agricultural labourer. By 1851, and probably before, Eliza was a house servant in St James Westminster. There she met William Smart, a clerk, and they married in Eliza's home parish of Harlow. The Smarts lived in Shoreditch, then briefly in Berkshire, finally settling on Barclay Street in St Pancras. They had six children, one of whom died young.
