He was a Lieutenant in the Royal Marines, age 25, married, and born in Winterbourne Basset. He was with his in-laws William and Elizabeth Ainsworth. His wife Elizabeth was visiting the Coulter family in Kent.8 
1881 CensusHenry and Elizabeth Gritton appeared on the 1881 Census of Gillingham, Kent, at Rutland House, enumerated 3 Apr 1881. Henry was 36, a Captain in the Royal Marines, and was born in Winterbourne Basset. Elizabeth was 37 and born in Hammersmith, Middlesex. Their children Margaret Ainsworth and Henry were living with them, as well as one general servant.9 
1891 CensusHenry and Elizabeth Gritton appeared on the 1891 Census of Chatham, Kent, at "Belmont", Maidstone Road, enumerated 5 Apr 1891. Henry was 46, a Major & Paymaster in the Royal Marines, and was born in Winterbourne Bassett. Elizabeth was 47 and born in Hammersmith, London. Their children Henry and Margaret A were with them, along with nephew William J Ainsworth (age 17, born in India), a cook and a housemaid.4 
1901 CensusHenry and Elizabeth Gritton appeared on the 1901 Census of Fulham, London, at 54 Fairholm Road, enumerated 31 Mar 1901. Henry was 56, born in Winterbourne Bassett, and was a Lieutenant Colonel Royal Marine Lt Infantry Retired. Elizabeth was 46 and born in Hammersmith, London. With them was their unmarried daughter Margaret A and a cook.10 
DeathHenry died on 20 Mar 1931.1
