The attestation papers included the following information: of Campbellford, Ont, born in Campbellford on 12th July 1898, father Charles E Bonnycastle of Campbellford, is a farmer, has served 2 years in H.S. Cadets. Physical description states age 18 yrs 3 mos, 5 ft 6 in, expanded chest 36 inches, dark complexion, brown eyes, d.brown hair, Church of England, and has a small scar centre of forehead.9 
MilitaryHe served with the Canadian Field Artillery. He arrived in France in August 1917 and was gassed in October of the same year, spending less than one day in a field hospital. He spent the war as a driver in the Artillery and was demobilized in May 1919 with the rank of Acting Bombardier.3
