1861 CensusHe and Walter Reid appeared on the 1861 Census of Aris, Inverness-shire, at Glenfinnan. He and Alexander Stirling [son of James Stirling & Mary Reid] were visiting Andrew Weir there. Walter was 33, unmarried, a farmer, and born in Dunblane. James was 26, unmarried, a farmer, and born in Dunblane.4 
MarriageJames Stirling married Margaret Christie, daughter of Robert Christie and Helen Robin, on 10 Dec 1868 in United Presbyterian Church, Dunblane, Perthshire.
James was a member of the FC [Free Church] and of Ardoch. Margaret was UP [United Presbyterian], residence Dunblane.5 
(Informant) DeathJames Stirling registered the 1869 death of Mary Christie. He was recorded as James Stirling, Brother-in-law, present.6 
1871 CensusJames and Maggie Stirling appeared on the 1871 Census of Ardoch, Perthshire, at Craighead. James was a farmer of 70 acres employing 2 labourers and one man. He was 29 years old and born in Ardoch. Maggie was 25 and born in Dunblane. They had one child, James (5 months). Also in the household were a farm servant and a female general servant.7 
OccupationAs noted on his daughter Helen's baptism record, James Stirling was a butcher in 1873.8 
(Widowed) DeathHis wife Margaret died on 5 Oct 1874. This was the day after their daughter Maggie was born.8,9  
MarriageJames Stirling married Margaret Baird Watson, daughter of Thomas Watson and Mary Christie, on 5 Jul 1875 in St Rollox, Glasgow, Lanarkshire.10
 
1881 CensusJames and Maggie appeared on the 1881 Census of Dunblane, Perthshire, at Upper Whiteston Farm. James was 38, a farmer of 230 arable acres employing 3 men & 1 woman, and was born in Dunblane. Maggie was 28, a farmer's wife, and born in Dunblane. Their children were James (10), Robert (9), Helen (7), Maggie (6), Mary (4), Thomas (1). They had one general domestic servant.11 
1891 CensusJames and Margaret appeared on the 1891 Census of Dunblane, Perthshire, at Upper Whiteston. Their house had 10 rooms with windows. James was 48, a farmer, birthplace Ardoch. Margaret was 39, birthplace Dunblane. Their children were Robert (19), Helen (17), Margaret (16), all employed on the farm, Thomas (11, scholar), and Alexander (1). With them also were Margaret's sister Mary Watson (34), one servant and one ploughman. [Several of their children were at Tamano, Ardoch]12 
DeathJames died on 18 Apr 1899 in Whitestone, Dunblane, Perthshire.13
