(Widowed) DeathHis wife Jean died on 8 May 1842, three days after the birth of their daughter Jane.3 
(Inventory) ProbateJames Kinross gave up the inventory of the estate of his father William Kinross on 14 Aug 1846 in Dunblane.7 
1851 CensusJames Kinross appeared on the 1851 Census of Dunblane, Perthshire, at Grinston. James was a farmer of 70 acres, widower, age 52, and born in Dunblane. With him were his children William (10, scholar) and Jane C (8, scholar). Also in the household were 2 male labourers and 2 female servants.10 
Note.On 29 Dec 1853, the moderator of the UP Session adverted to James Kinross of Grainston, one of the elders, who had gone abroad and his servant had a child by him.9 
NoteHe agreed to be suspended from office on 12 Feb 1854.9 
1861 CensusHe appeared on the 1861 Census of Dunblane, Perthshire, at Nether Grainston. He was 42 years old, a widower, a farmer of 23 acres employing 2 men & 1 boy, and was born in Dunblane. Also in the household were his children William (20, assistant on farm), Jane (19, housekeeper), an agricultural labourer, a male servant, and a housekeeper.11 
DeathJames died on 8 Mar 1872 in Grainston, Dunblane, Perthshire.
Details from registration: Died at 7h 30m PM, age 73, farmer, widower of Jane Crawford, father William Kinross farmer (deceased), mother Agnes maiden surname Dawson (deceased); died of bilious fever 10 days, certified by Thomas Brown LFPS. The informant was his brother Thomas Kinross.3,2
