(with Parents) 1850 CensusTunis Van Zant appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dundee Township, Monroe County, Michigan, with his parents. He was 15, attended school, and was born in New Jersey.2
MarriageHe married Emma Irish on 15 Apr 1854 in Blissfield Township, Lenawee County, Michigan.
Details from register: Tunis Van Zant, 20, of Blissfield Twp; Emeline Irish, 16, of Blissfield Twp. Married by JP D.J. Stuart and the witnesses were Mary & Margaret Stuart.3,4 
1860 CensusJohanna [sic] and Caroline Van Zant appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Blissfield, Lenawee County, Michigan, enumerated 19 Jul 1860. Johanna [Tunis] was 24, a Blacksmith, personal estate worth $50, and born in Ohio. Caroline was 22 and born in Michigan. With them was Oscar Van Zant (age 4, born Michigan).5 
MilitaryTunis Van Zandt enlisted as a Private on 12 Sep 1861 in Petersburg, Michigan. He joined Company F, Michigan 1st Engineer Regiment on Dec 11th and mustered out with a disability discharge on 6 May 1862. His residence at enlistment was noted to be Monroe County.6 
Tax ListTunis Vanzant appeared on the 1866 tax list for Michigan in Summerfield (Petersburgh post office) with a $40 carriage, on which he paid tax of $2.40.7 
1870 CensusTunis Van Zant appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Summerfield Township, Monroe County, Michigan, enumerated 2 Aug 1870. He was 33, a Blacksmith, born in New Jersey, and had personal estate worth $400. Tunis was living with the Bartlett family. [His sons Luther and Edgar were living in Deerfield Township with the Luther Irish family].8 
1880 CensusTunis VanZandt appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Petersburg, Summerfield Township, Monroe County, Michigan, enumerated 29 Jun 1880. He was 45, divorced, a Black Smith out of work one month the previous year, born in Ohio, parents born in New Jersey. There was a checkmark under "maimed, crippled, or otherwise disabled". His son Luther (14) was with him.9 
1890 Veteran CensusTunis Vanzandt was listed on the Veteran's schedule of the census taken in 1890 in Dundee, Monroe County, Michigan. He was a Private in Company F of Mc E M, enlisted 9 Dec 1861 and discharged 6 May 1862, serving 4 months and 27 days. He was injured on his leg.10 
MarriageHe married Elizabeth Stein on 28 Mar 1890 in Dundee.

Married by Minister J G Morgan and witnessed by Mrs A J Morgan and Mrs Mary E Stanger of Dundee.11 
1900 CensusTunis and Elizabeth Van Zandt appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Dundee, Monroe County, Michigan, enumerated 8 Jun 1900. Tunis was 65, born in Oct 1834 in Ohio [sic], parents born in New Jersey. He was a blacksmith out of work one month that year, owned his home free, and could read and write. Elizabeth was 45, born in 1855 in Germany, and the mother of one child. They had been married 8 years and their son Charles (born March 1893) was with them.12 
DeathTunis died between 1900 and 1904.
 
MilitaryTunis's widow Elizabeth applied for a widow's pension for his civil war service on 25 May 1904.13 
Research Note Don't yet have this fellow completely figured out. He might have been married four times and I'm not sure I have all his children or know which ones belong with which wife.
