Overview
* * * * *

     Winant was of the Dutch Van Zandt's of Somerset County, New Jersey, a descendant of Bernardus van Zandt who was born in Holland, October 3, 1700, and settled in Montgomery, Somerset County, New Jersey. [I have more details but not yet written up]
     With his first wife, Rachel, Winant had two children, Anna and Peter. Grandchildren of these two [i.e. first cousins - not uncommon] married one another so Winant and Rachel are our ancestors twice!
     After Rachel died, Winant married a second time, had 5 more children, and migrated to Ohio. His second wife died there. Winant married a third time and moved to Dundee, Monroe County, Michigan. He was a farmer and lived to the age of 74.

Research Note The 1790, 1800, 1810 & 1820 census for New Jersey were destroyed.
MarriageHe and Rachel Smith were married on 24 Jan 1822 in Somerset County, New Jersey. The officiating clergyman was John L Zabriskie, a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church.3
1830 CensusWinant Van Zandt was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 census taken on 1 Jun 1830 in Franklin Township, Somerset County, New Jersey. The tally for his household showed 1 male age 15-20, 2 males age 20-30, and 1 male age 30-40;
1 female under age 5, 1 female age 5-9, and 1 female age 20-29. There were no slaves or free colored persons in the household, although there were both in the community.4
MarriageHe married Mary Magdalen Wyckoff.
The marriage record has not yet been found.5,6
MigrationWinant and Mary migrated from New Jersey to Ohio between the birth of son Tunis in 1834 and that of Rosetta in 1837. Mary's brother William was in Sycamore Township, Hamilton County, Ohio as early as the 1830 census and Washington... states that Winant and Mary settled a few miles south at Oakley, in Columbia Township, Hamilton County. Washington... also states that they moved to Ohio immediately after Mary was widowed but as seen by the children's birthplaces this isn't correct.6

1840 CensusWinant Vansant was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 census taken on 1 Jun 1840 in Mississinawa Township, Darke County, Ohio. The tally for his household showed 1 male under age 5, 2 males age 5-9, 2 males age 15-20, 1 male age 40-50;
2 females under age 5 and 1 female age 30-39.
These tallies correspond with Winant, his wife Mary Magdalene, three Johnson children (from MM's first marriage) Peter, William and Joseph, and four Van Zandt children - Winant, Tunis, Rosetta, and Mary Ellen. They do not account for Winant's earlier children, Catharine (born c1827) and Peter (born 1829).
In the entire township, there were 67 males and 56 females and in each household one person was working in agriculture. There were no slaves or colored people.7
(Widowed) DeathHis wife Mary died on 1 Nov 1844.8
