[Some of these were John's children from his first marriage] The eldest 5 attended school and they were all born in Michigan.4 
1870 CensusJohn and Matilda Atkinson appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Ida Township, enumerated 25 Jun 1870. John was 53, a farmer owning $1200 worth of real estate and $100 of personal goods, born in New Jersey. Matilda was 50 [sic], keeping house, and was born in Canada, parents foreign born. With them were children Sarah (18), Agness (16), Hannah (14), Joshua (12), Eliza (10), Henrietta (8), Addy (6), Anson (4), and William (8 months). They were all born in Michigan and the oldest five attended school.3 
1880 CensusJohn G and Matilda L Atkinson appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Ida Township, enumerated 2 Jun 1880. John was 64, a farmer, born in New Jersey, parents born in New Jersey. Matilda was 49, keeping house, born in Canada, parents born in Canada. Their children at home were Joshua (21), Henrietta (17), Adda Naoma (15), Amaca (13), William B (11), and Eliza A (19). They all attended school except Eliza, who was Teaching School.2 
1900 CensusMatilda Atkinson appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Bluff Township, Grant County, Oklahoma Territory, enumerated 21 Jun 1900. She was 69, a widow, born in June 1830 in Canada F, father born in Vermont, mother in Canada F. She immigrated in 1848 and was the mother of 10 children, 9 still living. Matilda was in her married daughter Ada Young's household.5 
DeathMatilda died after 1900.
