Burtram John Hoffman (often spelled Bertram) was the youngest of four boys born in Cleveland to German immigrant parents. He owned his own grocery store and later in life worked for R.C. Browne Inc (don't know yet what they did). He and his wife Mary Stoll had one daughter, Ruth.

(with Parents) 1900 CensusBert Hoffman appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio with his parents. He was age 16, born in Aug 1883 in Ohio, and attended school 9 months that year. Three older brothers were also in the household.2 
MarriageHe married Mary Stoll, daughter of Henry Stoll and Dorothea (Dora) Boersch, on 28 Nov 1907 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
They were married after the publication of bans by Rev H P Eckhardt. [He was the pastor at Christ Lutheran Church in Cleveland]3 
1910 Census Burtram and Mary and Ruth have not yet been spotted on the 1910 census.

Details from card: Burtram John Hoffmann, residence 12501 Gruss Ave, age 35, born August 15 1883, bookkeeper for Frantz Premier [vacuum cleaners] located at Ivanhoe Rd & Euclid, nearest relative Mary Hoffmann of same address, tall height slender build, gray eyes and brown hair.4 
1920 CensusBurtram and Mary Hoffman appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, at 12501 Gruss Avenue, enumerated 24 Jan 1920. They owned their home with a mortgage. Burtram was 35, born in Ohio, father born in Germany and mother in Ohio. He was the owner of a grocery store. Mary was 36, born in Ohio, father born in Germany and mother in New York. With them was their daughter Ruth (11) and Mary's widowed mother Dora Stoll (71).5 
1930 CensusBertram and Mary Hoffman appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of University Heights Village, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, at 2172 Brockway Road, enumerated 9 Apr 1930. They rented their house for $65 a month and owned a radio. Bertram was 46, first married at 23, born in Ohio, and his parents were born in Ohio. He was a store keeper in a grocery store and an employer but was not at work the previous regular working day. He was not a veteran. Mary was 48, first married at 25, born in Ohio, mother born in Germany, and father in New York. With them was their married daughter Ruth (21), her husband John E Kennedy (25), and their daughter Faith (6 months). In the household was also a negro servant, Dalia Yorbrough (23, married, born in Alabama).6

MilitaryHe completed a draft registration card on 25 Apr 1942 in Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. It was noted that Burtram John Hoffman resided at 11733 Edgewater Drive, Lakewood, telephone B.O. 6826. He was 58, born in Cleveland on 8-15-1883, and worked for R.C. Browne Inc at 1440 West 25th Street, Cleveland. Burtram was 5' 8 1/2" tall, weighed 163 pounds, with grey eyes, light complexion, and was bald. His contact person was his daughter Mrs Ruth Kennedy.1

In lieu of flowers you may make contributions to Cleveland Cancer Society.11
