Life Events

BaptismWilliam Channing was baptized on 4 Dec 1776 in Tiverton, Devon.1
MarriageHe married Catherine Way, daughter of John Way and Sarah Hart, on 11 Jul 1805 in St Sidwell Exeter, Devon.
The witnesses were Elizabeth Welsford and Samuel Welsford. They witnessed many of the marriages so probably did not know the couple.2
(Mentioned) NewspaperWilliam Channing was mentioned in the newspaper notice about the marriage of Thomas Oliver to his daughter Sarah on 16 Jan 1834, which stated that Sarah was the, "eldest daughter of Mr W Channing, of Thangsley Farm, parish of Cheriton Fitzpaine."3
1841 CensusWilliam and Catherine Channing appeared on the 1841 Census of Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon, at Thongsleigh Mill. William was 65, a Farmer, and Catherine was 55. With them were [their son] John Channing (35), [their son-in-law, daughter, & grandson] George Heywood (45, ag lab), Mary Heywood (25), Edwin Heywood (1), [their granddaughter] Drusilla Oliver (5), and two male servants. All were born in Devon. [In the 1841 census, ages were rounded down and relationships were not recorded]4
1851 CensusWilliam and Caroline [sic] appeared on the 1851 Census of Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon, at Thonsly Mill. William was 73, a Miller and Farmer of 30 acres Employing 2 Laborers, and was born in Tiverton. Caroline was 65 and born in Crews Morchard. With them was their son John (45, unmarried, Miller journeyman), and two grandsons: William Channing (16) and Edwin Haywood (11), both scholars.5
Research Note The name of William's wife 'Caroline' was likely an enumerator error. The age and birthplace are correct for Catherine.
In the 1851 census, grandson William was the son of their son William and grandson Edwin was the son of their daughter Mary Ann.
Death He was not in Cheriton Fitzpaine in the 1861 census; there is an entry in the death register index for a William Channing in 1856 in Tiverton RD.
