Samuel was a farmer from Tennessee who moved to Perry County, Illinois. There he married Margaret James who was 22 years younger than himself and they had a family of eleven known children, including our ancestor Sylva Ann. Samuel was literate and served in the Civil War.

Research Note There were several Wilsons who were born in Tennessee living in Perry County. The Perry County history book stated that Samuel Wilson's parents were Willis Wilson & Mary Nall. The book does not indicate its source and I have as yet been able to verify that. 
BirthSamuel Wilson was born on 15 Nov 1822 in Davidson County, Tennessee.2,3
 
Residence-Moved In 1852, Samuel Wilson moved to Illinois.4 
MarriageHe married Margaret James, daughter of Thomas James and Catherine Null, on 6 Mar 1859 in Pinckneyville, Perry County, Illinois.
The license was issued on March 5th to Mr Samuel Willson and Miss Margaret James and they were married on the 6th by L T Staton, J.P.5

1860 CensusSaml and Margaret Wilson appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Township 6 South, Range 3 West, Perry County, Illinois, enumerated on 10 Jul 1860. The nearest post office was Pinckneyville. Samuel was 36, a Farmer owning no land, having $150 worth of personal goods, and born in Kentucky. Margaret was 19 and born in Illinois. She could not read and write. Their daughter Mary C was 6 months old.6
MilitarySamuel Wilson joined the 110 IL US Infantry on 13 Aug 1862 in Perry County. He was with Company G which consolidated with Company D. Samuel was a private, signed up by Cpt Day for a period of 3 years. He was mustered in on 11 September 1862 at Camp Anna, Illinois. and mustered out 8 June 1865 at Washington, DC by Lt Scroggs.

Personal characteristics noted were: residence Perry County, age 40, height 5'10", light hair, blue eyes, dark complexion, married farmer, nativity Davidson County, Tennessee.3 
1865 CensusMargaret Wilson was listed as the head of household on the 1865 state census in Township 6S, Range 1W, Perry County, Illinois. The tally for this household showed
10 & under: 1 male, 2 females
11-20: 1 male
21-30: 0
31-40: 1 female

There was no male age 18-45 subject to military duty. There was no livestock or grain produced.7 
1870 CensusSamuel and Margaret appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Township 4 South, Range 2 West, Perry County, Illinois, enumerated 14 Jul 1870. Their closest post office was Tamaroa. Samuel was 47, a Farmer, and born in Tennessee. Margaret was 29, House Keeping, and born in Illinois. With them were Mary C (10), John T (8), Nancy E (6), Sarah E (5), Francis M (2), and Cilan A (3 months). The children were all born in Illinois and the eldest three attended school.8
1880 CensusSamuel and Margaret Wilson appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Tamaroa, Perry County, Illinois, enumerated 1 Jul 1880. Samuel was 56, a Farm Laborer, born in Tennessee, parents born in Tennessee. Margaret was 37, Keeping House, born in Illinois, father in Tennessee, mother in Baden. Their children were John (19, farm laborer), Sarah (14), Francis (12), Sylvia (10), Angeline (8), Luella (5), William (3), and Evaline (5 months old). None of the children were recorded as attending school.9
(Witness) Marriage Samuel Wilson witnessed the marriage of Thomas Collins and his daughter Silva Ann Wilson on 9 Sep 1886 in Pinckneyville.1 
1900 CensusSamuel and Margaret Wilson appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Pinckneyville, Perry County, Illinois, enumerated 2 Jun 1900. Samuel was 77, born Nov 1822 in Tennessee, parents born in Tennessee, Farmer, could read and write, and owned his house and farm free. Margaret was 55, born in Aug 1844 in Illinois, father born in Tennessee, mother in Missouri. She was the mother of 6 children [sic], 5 were still living, and could read but not write. They had been married 34 years. With them was one daughter - Eva L, age 20.10
DeathSamuel died on 3 Jul 1906 in East St Louis, St Clair County, Illinois.4

ObituaryHis obituary was published on 5 Jul 1906 in the East St Louis Daily Journal.

Death's Calendar.
Samuel Wetson [sic], aged 84, of 512 Market street, died yesterday morning from senality [sic]. The body was taken to Pinckneyville last night for burial.11
 
Note.There is a civil war stone for Sam Wilson at Mueller Hill Cemetery in Pinckneyville.12
