BaptismMatthew Wright was baptized on 7 Sep 1828 in St Mary Lambeth, Surrey. He had a twin brother named Mark. They were the sons of William, a butcher, and Jane Wright, of Princes Street.4 
(with Mother) 1841 CensusMathew appeared on the 1841 Census of Lambeth, Surrey in the household of his widowed mother Jane. He was 11 and born in the county.5 
1851 CensusMatthew Wright appeared on the 1851 Census of St Mary Lambeth, Surrey, at 67 Broad Street. Mattw was 22, a Porter, single, and born in Lambeth. He was lodging with the Wm Burley family who lived at the same address as his brothers Noah and Charles. His sister Ellen's mother-in-law Catherine Buckley was also there.6 
MarriageHe married Maria Matthews on 16 Jan 1853 in St Mary Newington, Surrey.

They were married after banns in the parish church. Matthew and Maria both signed with an X and the witnesses were Noah Wright and Mary [X] Wright.7 
1861 CensusMatthew and Maria Wright appeared on the 1861 Census of Lambeth, Surrey, at 2 Hamilton Street, enumerated 7 Apr 1861. Matthew was 31, a coalheaver, and was born in Lambeth. Maria was 29 and born in Lambeth. They lived with Matthew's widowed mother Jane. Their children were Maria (8), Matthew (6), Clara (5), and Jane (1.)3 
1871 CensusMatthew and Maria Wright appeared on the 1871 Census of Lambeth, Surrey, at No 7 Portland Street. Matthew was 43, a Carman, and born in Lambeth. Maria was 40, a Laundress and born in Lambeth. Their children were Jane (11), Clara (9) [sic-she was 15], and Matthew (7) [sic-he was 16]. They also had one lodger living with them.8 
Note.Daughters Jane, Mary Anne, and Georgina were all baptised in 1876. 
(Witness) Marriage Matthew Wright witnessed the marriage of Alfred Carter and his daughter Clara Wright on 25 Dec 1877 in South Kennington, Surrey. Matthew signed with an X.9 
Research Note There is an entry in the death index for a Mathew Wright age 52 in Lambeth in 1880.10 
1881 CensusHis widow Maria appeared on the 1881 Census of Lambeth, London, at 23 Heman Street. There were two small families at this address. Maria was a widow, age 50, a Laundress, and born in London. Her daughters were Georgiana (17, general servant) and Mary A (14, general servant.)11
