Thomas Cox was an excise officer, so we can infer that he could read and write and do arithmetic. He married Martha Ann Beaton in Southwark, Surrey in 1807. There they had five children, then a sixth in Clerkenwell. Nothing further is yet known about Thomas.

Banns were published 22 Nov, 29 Nov, 6 Dec 1807. The curate was Thos Martyn. The marriage certificate stated that Thomas Cox, bachelor, and Martha Beaton, spinster, of this parish were married by Wm Parker. Martha signed with an X and the witnesses were John Tinney and Thomas Hammond.2,3

Note.Their daughter Sarah Jane, age 5, was buried in St Pancras in November 1818. The register noted her abode as Cromer Street.4 
Residence In 1826, Thomas' son James Richard was buried in Christchurch Southwark. His abode was recorded as Gravel Lane.5 
Note.The list of all Excise Officers of 1829 showed that Thomas Coxe (there is only one with that name) was an “Officer for the Water Guard”, specifically a “Tidewaiter on the Superior Lift”, on a salary of £3 10s.6
