I have been unable to trace, so far, any of my earlier Irish ancestors. Available on-line Irish records in late November 2012 showed nothing at all for the name of Isaac Sterling between 1780 and 1834. The earliest entry, in 1835, was for the marriage of one Isaac Sterling and Sarah Gallagher, both of Bishop's Street, First Derry Parish, (London)Derry, who were married on September 11th in the Presbyterian Church. Neither the groom's nor the bride's parent's names were noted in this record. Nonetheless, this appears likely to be a vital event for my ancestors.

With a name like STIRLING it seems they would have been Scottish Presbyterian settlers in the 1600s or the 1700s, planted by the British government in their attempt to "Anglicize" Ireland.

A wider study of the surname STIRLING from 1750 showed an increasing number of vital events for the surname in each decade, with five in the 1750s, eight in the 1760s, eight again in the 1770s and 1780s, nine in the 1790s, twenty four in the 1800s and forty three in the 1810s, when Isaac was almost certainly born. In County Londonderry there was one baptism in the 1790s, of William to Robert Sterling and Eleanor Platt at St. Columb's, Derry, Church of Ireland. And there were six County Londonderry baptisms in the 1800s, all Church of Ireland and to several sets of parents.

In the 1861 Census of England and Wales Isaac was listed as a 57 year-old Painter and Glazier born in Ireland. He was head of the household living wife his wife and four of his children. He lived in the St. John's district of Birkenhead.

When his son William married he described his father as a Painter, although other evidence suggests he had died by then.
