Life Events | |
Birth | William Reid was born circa 1723.2 |
Marriage | He married Lilias Sharp.3,2 |
Research Note | Lilias Sharp was is identified as William Reid's wife on their gravestone. Unfortunately, the Dunblane marriage records are missing for the period in which they likely married. There is quite a gap in William's children and Lilias was about 13 years younger than William; perhaps a second marriage for him. |
Note. | Witnesses for his sons' baptisms were Alexr and William Reids (1757), James and Alexander Reids yr [there, i.e. Wester Feaddles] (1759), James & Alexr Reid (1769).1 |
Death | William died on 6 Oct 1800.2 |
Burial | He was buried in Ardoch, Muthill, Perthshire.2 |
Gravestone | Their gravestone is a table stone with a share & coulter in Ardoch Cemetery, Muthill, Perthshire.2 |
Research Note | In 2013, Colin Bendall visited the cemetery, photographing and transcribing the inscriptions. Much detail had weathered since the Mitchell's transcriptions in 1975. Combining the two yields: HERE LIES THE BODY OF LILY SHARP WIFE OF WM REID TENANT IN WESTER FEDDAL DEPARTED THIS ..... DECr 7th 1792 ...... ...... ...... 56 YEARS AND THE BODY OF WILLIAM REID HER HUSBAND WHO DEPARTED THIS EARTH OCTr 6TH 1800 AGED 77 YEARS AND JAMES REID THEIR SON WHO DIED AT WESTER FEDDAL MARCH 16th 1848 AGED 78 YEARS. |
Research Note | "Tenant" means tenant farmer. |
Research Note | Identical stones for James Reid (c1718-1797) and William Reid (c1723-1800) are next to one another in the cemetery. They both farmed in Wester Feddal. Were they brothers? It is likely. One possibility for William's origin: There was a baptism for William, son of John in Whittetstown (still in the parish of Dunblane), in 1723. However a Feddal origin seems more likely as Reids were tenants there long before his birth. There was a baptism for James, son of Alexander in Wester Feddal, in 1717. The date fits this James. After James, there are baptisms for other children of Alexander in Wester Feddal in 1726, 1729, 1733 and 1735. Obviously there is space for a William born c1723. Gaps and lack of mother's names in the baptism registers make it difficult to draw conclusions at this point. |
