(Heir) WillHe was mentioned in the trust disposition and deed of settlement of his father Alexander Stirling dated 21 Aug 1823 in Dunblane. James, third son of the present marriage, was bequeathed the tack and possession and full stocking of Craighead. If James was to die before the end of the tack, it would pass to his immediate younger brother Peter. James was underage, so it was to be managed by his mother. James was also to receive the remainder of the household furniture and plenishing. The residue of the estate was to be divided among six children, including James and Peter, of the present marriage, with sons receiving double the share of daughters.2 
MarriageJames Stirling married Mary Reid, daughter of John Reid and Elizabeth Graham, on 16 May 1829 in Dunblane.
The register noted they were both of this parish. The actual marriage information was not recorded, so this may be a date of banns.1

1841 CensusJames and Mary Stirling appeared on the 1841 Census of Dunblane, Perthshire, at Craighead, Wester Feddall. James was 30 years old, a farmer, and born in Perthshire. Mary was 30 and born in Perthshire. The Stirling children in the household were Elizabeth (11), Alexander (9), John (7), and Mary (3). Also there were John Reid (20, clerk, probably Mary's brother), 2 agricultural labourers, & 3 female servants. [Note: in the 1841 census, ages were rounded down and relationships were not recorded].5 
1851 CensusJames and Mary appeared on the 1851 Census of Dunblane, Perthshire, at Craighead. James was 44, born in Dunblane, and was a farmer of 74 acres employing 2 servants. Mary was 44 and born in Dunblane. Their children were Elizabeth (19, house employment), Alexander (17, farm work), Mary (12, scholar), James (8, scholar), and John (4). Also there were a house servant and two farm servants.6 
1861 CensusJames and Mary appeared on the 1861 Census of Dunblane, Perthshire, at Nether Cambushinnie. James was a farmer of 255 acres employing 2 men and 3 women, age 55, and born in Ardoch. Mary was 55 and born in Ardoch. Their children at home were James (18, farmer) and John William (14, scholar). Also there were 3 domestic servants, an agricultural labourer, and a ploughman. The house had 5 rooms with windows.7 
(Witness) Marriage James Stirling witnessed the marriage of his brother-in-law Thomas Reid and Christian Buchanan King on 5 Jun 1861 in Earn Farm, Kilmadock, Perthshire.8,9 
1871 CensusJames Stirling and Mary Reid appeared on the 1871 Census of Ardoch, Perthshire, at Netherton of Cambushinnie House. James was 65, born in Ardoch, and was a farmer of 24 acres employing 5 labourers. Mary was 65 and born in Ardoch. With them were their son John W (24), 2 domestic servants, and 2 farm servants.10 
1881 CensusJames and Mary appeared on the 1881 Census of Ardoch, Perthshire, at Nether Cambushinnie. James was 75, the joint owner of 400 acres arable employing 4 men & 3 women, and was born in Dunblane. Mary was 75, a farmer's wife, and born in Dunblane. With them was their daughter Mary (43, visitor, farmer's wife), and 2 general servants.11 
Gravestone James erected a monument at Ardoch cemetery for his parents and his son. The transcription reads:

WillJames Stirling wrote a will dated 11 Aug 1887. Recorded in Court Books of Commissariot of Perth 10 Aug 1891.13 
(Widowed) DeathHis wife Mary died on 28 Dec 1889.14  
1891 CensusJames Stirling appeared on the 1891 Census of Ardoch, Perthshire, at Nether Cambushinnie. James was a widower, 85, farmer & employer. His house had 6 rooms with windows and there were 2 domestic servants and 1 farm servant.
Enumerated with him was his son John W (45, farmer) and granddaughter Agnes Thomas Stirling (22, housekeeper). The rest of John's family was at neighbouring Knoxfauld. [Agnes was the daughter of Alexander]15 
DeathJames died on 30 May 1891 in Netherton of Cambushinnie, Ardoch, Perthshire.
Information from register: James Stirling, farmer, widower of Mary Reid, died at 5h 35m PM, male, age 85, parents Alexander Stirling, farmer (deceased) & Margaret Stirling maiden surname MacLaren (dec'd). The informant was his son John Stirling.16
