Research Note | This photograph was inscribed many years later. Mary Reid would definitely have been "a Stirling in Cambushinnie" but who are the others? I would also like to hear from anyone who can date the photo from clothing, hairstyles, etc. |
Birth | Mary Reid was born on 3 Mar 1805 in Wester Feddal, Dunblane, Perthshire. Mother's name not included; no baptism date given.1 |
Marriage | She married James Stirling, son of Alexander Stirling and Margaret McLaren, on 16 May 1829 in Dunblane, Perthshire. The register noted they were both of this parish. The actual marriage information was not recorded, so this may be a date of banns.1 |
1841 Census | James and Mary Stirling appeared on the 1841 Census of Dunblane, Perthshire, at Craighead, Wester Feddall. James was 30 years old, a farmer, and born in Perthshire. Mary was 30 and born in Perthshire. The Stirling children in the household were Elizabeth (11), Alexander (9), John (7), and Mary (3). Also there were John Reid (20, clerk, probably Mary's brother), 2 agricultural labourers, & 3 female servants. [Note: in the 1841 census, ages were rounded down and relationships were not recorded].3 |
(Heir) Will | Mary Reid was named an heir in the will of John Reid dated 21 Apr 1849. Daughter Mary wife of James Stirling Farmer at Craighead was bequeathed £100 Sterling.4 |

Mary was 44 and born in Dunblane. Their children were Elizabeth (19, house employment), Alexander (17, farm work), Mary (12, scholar), James (8, scholar), and John (4). Also there were a house servant and two farm servants.5 |
1861 Census | James and Mary appeared on the 1861 Census of Dunblane, Perthshire, at Nether Cambushinnie. James was a farmer of 255 acres employing 2 men and 3 women, age 55, and born in Ardoch. Mary was 55 and born in Ardoch. Their children at home were James (18, farmer) and John William (14, scholar). Also there were 3 domestic servants, an agricultural labourer, and a ploughman. The house had 5 rooms with windows.6 |

1881 Census | James and Mary appeared on the 1881 Census of Ardoch, Perthshire, at Nether Cambushinnie. James was 75, the joint owner of 400 acres arable employing 4 men & 3 women, and was born in Dunblane. Mary was 75, a farmer's wife, and born in Dunblane. With them was their daughter Mary (43, visitor, farmer's wife), and 2 general servants.10 |
Death | Mary died on 28 Dec 1889 in Netherton of Cambushinnie, Ardoch, Perthshire. Details from certificate: Mary Stirling, age 84, died at 3h 40m PM, parents John Reid farmer (deceased) & Elisabeth Reid maiden surname Graham (dec'd); informant John N (or M??) Stirling.11 |
Gravestone | The gravestone in Muthill Ardoch Churchyard, Perthshire, reads: In memory of James Stirling Nether Cambushinie who died 29th May 1891 aged 89 years and Mary Reid his wife who died 28th December 1889 aged 85 years their son Alexander who died at Kippendavie Main 27th August 1884 aged 62 years.12 |
