They were married in the Parish Church by Banns and the witnesses were [Mary Ann's father or brother] Peter Godart and [Mary Ann's sister] Charlotte Godart.3 
1871 CensusJoseph and Mary Ann appeared on the 1871 Census of Mile End Old Town, London, at 37 Clark Street. Joseph was age 31, a Plumber, and was born in Peckham, Surrey. Mary Ann was 29 and born in St George East, Middlesex. Their children were Elizth Isab (6), Thos Peter (4), Louisa Chte (2), and Jos Wm (2 months.)2 
1881 CensusJoseph and Mary Ann appeared on the 1881 Census of Mile End Old Town, London, at 93 Devonshire Street. Joseph was age 41, a House Plumber, and was born in Peckham, Surrey. Mary Ann was 39 and born in St Georges, Surrey. Their children wee Elizth I (16), Louisa C (12), Joseph W (10), Florence A (5), and Fredk G (3). Elizabeth was a bookfolder and the next 3 were scholars.4 
1891 CensusJoseph and Mary Ann appeared on the 1891 Census of Hackney, London, at 58 Forest Road. Joseph was 51, employed as a Plumber, and was born in Peckham, London. Mary Ann was 49 and born in St George's E. With them were seven children: Louise C (22), Joseph W (20, brass finisher), Florence A (15, juvenile costume apprentice), Fredk S (13, cashier), Annie M (10, scholar), Frank C (7, scholar), and Harold J (3), as well as 2 lodgers.5 
1901 CensusJoseph and Mary Ann Brown appeared on the 1901 Census of Hackney, London, at 58 Forest Road. Joseph was 61, a House Decorator, and was born in Peckham. Mary Ann was 59, born in St Georges E. Their children were Elizabeth I (36), Louisa C (32, deaf from childhood), Frances A (25, postal counter clerk), Fredk G (23, hosiers assistant), Frank C (17, provision merchants assistant), and Harold J (13). All the children were born in Stepney. They also had one boarder.6
