THE TABLES TURNED.
The folly of women who have quarrels with their husbands straightway applying to the Adelaide Police Court for judicial separation when they are not able to prove everything that they charge their husbands with was shown at the City Court on Thursday morning. Alfred Edmonds, defended by Mr. O J. Supple, was charged, on the information of his wife, Alice May, with having deserted her and wilfully neglected to provide maintenance for herself and her child, on February 28. The defendant denied the charge. The informant, who applied for summary protection under the Married Women's Protection Act, stated that up till last Saturday she had been living with her husband at Southwark, but on the evening of that date he threatened to shoot her. She left the house and ran to the residence of a neighbor. Shortly afterwards she spoke to her husband over a back fence, and demanded her baby. After about an hour's persuasion the child was given to her. She then asked for her clothes. Her husband did not refuse to let her go inside. Without allowing any other witnesses to be examined the S M said "You have no case under this Act. You charge your husband with deserting you; as a matter of fact, you deserted him. If he has threatened your life you must take other action." The information was dismissed.5
