Life Events

BirthCatherine McAra was born circa 1799 in Largs, Ayrshire.2
 
MarriageShe married William Graham, son of Thomas Graham and Mary McEwan, in 1818. It was recorded in Largs, Ayrshire on October 23rd and in Glasgow on October 27th.1 
NoteCatherine McAra and William Graham wrote a post nuptial contract of marriage on 29 Jul 1819.1 
1841 CensusWilliam and Catherine Graham appeared on the 1841 Census of Strathblane, Stirlingshire, at Easter Ballewan. William was 55, a Farmer, and not born in Perthshire. Catharine was 40 and also not born in the county. With them were Thomas (20), Catharine (20), William (15), Agnes (18), James (15), Mary (14), and John (10) as well as two male servants and one female servant (Margaret McCullough, 30). [note that ages were rounded down in the 1841 census].3 
(Heir) WillCatherine McAra was named an heir in the will of William Graham dated 19 Oct 1848.
To spouse Mrs Catherine McAra or Graham £10 for mournings and also fulfilling the provisions contained in the Post Nuptial Contract of marriage dated 29 July 1819 and £3 per month interim support and aliment until the first term of Whitsunday or Martinmas.1
 
1851 CensusWilliam and Catherine appeared on the 1851 Census of Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire, at Washington. William was 67, a Farmer of 34 Acres employing 2 men, and was born in Dunblane. Catherine was 52 and born in Largs, Ayrshire. They had one daughter, Catherine (29) as well as Dairy Maid Margaret McCulloch (40) and a male Farm Servant.2 
(Mentioned) CodicilCatherine McAra was mentioned in the codicil to William Graham's will dated 7 Jan 1853. In it he revoked her £10 legacy for mournings.1 
DeathCatherine died between 1853 and 1856.
William died in 1856. 
Research Note In July 2013, I received an email from Eva Ferrell, an antiques dealer in Tennessee. She has a sampler dated 1819 made by a Catherine McAra in Port Glasgow.
