Lemuel van Zandt, as a federal soldier in the Civil War, was confined in Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia, for many months. His relatives thought him dead. At the first opportunity he wrote his name and place of confinement on a piece of brown wrapping paper with a lead pencil and threw it out of the window to a prisoner who was being exchanged, asking him to deliver it to his family in Ohio, which was done by the man to Lemuel's niece at Oakley, Ohio, Mary Ann Johnson. This man did not know Lemuel [Ardell Bowman].5

Lemuel was 36, a Huckster, born in Ohio, parents born in New Jersey. Mary was 28, Keeping House, and born in Michigan. They were married within the previous year. With them were sons Fred L (6) and Frank E (4) as well as Lemuel's stepson Ellsworth Shelden and mother in law Mary J Rightmire.9 
OccupationLemuel Van Zandt was a a farmer, according to his son's birth registration on 17 Sep 1881.10 
DeathLemuel died on 21 Feb 1885 in Deshler, Henry County, Ohio.4
 
BurialHe was buried in Old Petersburg Cemetery, Petersburg, Monroe County, Michigan. Transcribed cemetery record: VANZANDT, Lemuel, b. no date, d. no date, Company B48th Battalion Ohio Veteran Infantry.11 
Note.In May 1891, Lemuel's widow Mary applied for their children Lemuel and Mary Rosetta to be educated at the Ohio Soldiers & Sailors Orphans Home in Xenia, Ohio.4
