Research Note He was actually 19 years old when he enlisted. 
(with Parents) 1881 CensusCarl Boersch appeared on the 1881 Census of Preston Village, Waterloo County, Ontario with his parents. He was 20 years old, born in Ontario, and was a shoemaker.5 
1900 CensusA Charley Borsch appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of San Francisco, California, at Pier 11. He was a sailor, age 39, born Sept 1860 in Canada, single, parents born in Germany. He immigrated in 1879, was naturalized, was a Cook, and could read, write, and speak English.
The 'household' consisted of 14 sailors.3
