Mary Ann Rapp was born in Wurtemburg, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, according to her daughter Ella's death certificate. The Rapp family were early settlers in the town of Wurtemburg which was named after their ancestral area of Germany. Mary Ann first married Joseph Stritmater. They migrated to Iowa (Mary Ann's brother Daniel was also there) but Joseph died there within a couple of years. She and their son, John Marcus returned to Pennsylvania. She went on to marry Robert Paisley, a farmer 14 years her senior, with whom she had 3 daughters and 2 sons.

1850 CensusJoseph and Mary Strickmater [sic] appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Shenango Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 19 Aug 1850. Joseph was 29, a mason owning real estate worth $1000, and born in Pennsylvania. Mary was 26 and born in Pennsylvania. With them was John (5) as well as Daniel (15), perhaps Joseph's brother.5 
(Widowed) DeathJoseph's death on 28 Jun 1856 in Eddyville, Wapella County, Iowa, left Mary a widow.6

1860 CensusRobt and M.A. Paisly [sic] appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Union Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 4 Jun 1860. Their nearest post office was in New Castle. Robert was 52, a farmer with $2000 worth of real estate and $500 of personal estate, and was born in Pennsylvania. M.A. was 38 and born in Ohio. There was also a female, age 2, named S.S. and a farmer's laborer Jno Strick?ter, 16.8 
1870 CensusRobert and Mary A Parley [sic] appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Union Township, enumerated 28 Jun 1870. Their nearest post office was in Mount Jackson. Robert was 60 [might be 66], a farmer owning $1600 of real estate and $100 of personal goods. Mary A was 46 and keeping house. The children were Sophia (11), Eliza A (10), Juliana (6), Charles (10 months), and James A (4). They were all born in Pennsylvania and Sophia and Eliza attended school. The next household was Robert's brother Andrew and his family.3 
1880 CensusMary A Paisley, a widow, appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 2 Jun 1880. She was 56, keeping house, and born in Ohio [sic]. Her children were Evangeline (21, dress maker), Eliza E (20, tailoress), Julia A (16, at home), James (13, clerk in store), and Charles (9). None were recorded as attending school but all could read and write.9 
DeathMary died on 28 Sep 1891 in New Castle.7
