The witnesses were Graham F[?] Simpson & Julia Frazer both of Winnipeg. The bride & groom were both Presbyterian and were married by Daniel M Gordun by license.1 
1891 CensusJ G and Catharine Simpson appeared on the 1891 Census of Winnipeg, Manitoba, enumerated 7 Apr 1891. The Simpson family lived in a 2 story, 6 room wood house. J.G. was 29, born in Ontario, parents born in Ontario, religion Presbyterian, and was a Whole Sale Grocery Shipper. Catharine was 29, born in Ontario, parents born in Ontario, and her religion was Presbyterian. Their children were Harold Edgar (6), Percival McLean (4), John Fred (2 1/2). Also with them is Christina McLean (22, born Ontario [probably Catherine's sister]) and a servant (female, 12 years old, birthplace Iceland.)3 
NoteJohn and Catherine registered the births of their children Percy, John, and William in 1895. Years later as adults, Grace, Leslie, and Albert registered their births.4 
1901 CensusJohn and Catharine Simpson appeared on the 1901 Census of Winnipeg, Manitoba, at 487 Sargent Avenue. John was 39, born 22 December 1861 in Ontario, of Scotch origin, Presbyterian, and employed as a shipper of wholesale goods, earning $1032 as well as income of $60 from other sources. Catharine was 38, born 18 March 1862 in Ontario, Presbyterian. Their children were Harold E (16), Percival McL (14), John F (12), William A (9), Grace M (5), Leslie H (4, male), and Albert (3). They lived in a 7 room wooden house on 2 lots.2 
1906 CensusJohn and Catherine Simpson appeared on the 1906 Census of Winnipeg, Manitoba, at 556 Bannatyne Avenue. John was 45 and born in Ontario. Catherine was 43 and born in Ontario. Their children were Harold (21), Percy (18), Frederick (17), William (15), Grace (11), Leslie (10), and Albert (8). They also had a young female servant newly immigrated from England.5 
1911 CensusJohn and Catherine appeared on the 1911 Census of Winnipeg, Manitoba, at 58 St James Place. John was 49, born in December 1861 in Ontario and was an implement mfr working on his own account in a shop. He had $6000 of life insurance costing $125. Catherine was 48, born March 1862 in Ontario. The family was Scotch and Presbyterian. Their children were Harold Edgar (26, ledger keeper), John Frederick (19, bookkeeper), William Alexander (18, bookkeeper), Grace Margureta (16), Leslie Howard (15), and Albert Edward (13.)6

1916 CensusJohn and Catherine appeared on the 1916 Census of Winnipeg, Manitoba, at 58 St James Place, enumerated 1 Jun 1916. John was 54, born in Ontario, and was a bookkeeper for a corn? house. Catherine was age 58, born in Ontario, Presbyterian, could speak English and French, and had no occupation. Five sons were in military service: Harold and Fred at Camp Hughes [in Manitoba], W.A. and Albert in England, and Leslie in France. At home was Grace (23). [Although at the same address, the family's enumeration was split between page 18 and 22 of the census]10 
1921 CensusJohn and Catherine appeared on the 1921 Census of Winnipeg, Manitoba, at 58 St James Place. They owned their 6 room wood home. John was 59, born in Ontario, parents born in Ontario, occupation Buyer for Moore & ?? Wholesale, earning $2900 the previous year. Catherine was 57, born in Ontario, father born in Ontario, mother in Scotland. Their children were Grace Marguerite (25), Leslie Howard (24, bookkeeper?), and Albert Edward (23, civil engineering student). The family was Presbyterian.11 
DeathJohn died on 16 Nov 1946 in Smith Falls, Ontario.12

Ex-Winnipegger Died in East
John Simpson, 85, associated with the wholesale grocery business in Winnipeg most of his life, died in St Francis General Hospital, Smith Falls, Ont, Nov 16.
Born in Almonte, Mr Simpson came to Winnipeg in 1881, starting his business career with the firm of Donald H Smith. He later joined the firm of Kenneth McKenzie company, remaining with them for 25 years. When this firm was discontinued, Mr Simpson joined the firm of Mason and Hickey, with whom he reamained for the balance of his business career.
Mr Simpson was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows for 60 years, 50 years of which he held the office of financial secretary of North Star lodge No 2, Winnipeg. He was a charter member of this lodge and was also connected with the Grand Lodge, IOOF of Manitoba, holding the office of Grand Secretary for 15 years. He was a member of the United church of Canada. Mr Simpson is survived by five sons, J F Simpson of Los Angeles, Calif; H E of Detroit; P M of Outlook, Sask; L H of Ottawa; and A E of Montreal; and one daughter, Mrs J R Guthridge of Belleville. Also surviving are two brothers, Graham of Victoria, BC; William of Crystal City; and one sister, Mrs Alex Mutch, of Crystal City, Man. L A Mutch, MP, of Winnipeg South, is a nephew. Five grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held in J J Marsh and Sons funeral home with Rev R W Armstrong officiating. Burial was made in Almonte. The funeral arrangements were held under the auspices of Rideau lodge No 241, IOOF, Smith Falls, with members of the order acting as pallbearers and attending the burial service at Almonte.12
 
Research Note Alexander McLean's wife was Margaret Forgie. Alexander's sister Catherine McLean married John Simpson, whose mother was also named Margaret Forgie.
