Research Note George Cordell & James Cordell.
I have found that a descendant of George Cordell, born c1793 in Harlow, shares two segments of DNA with a descendant [me] of James Cordell who was born in Harlow in 1804. So, they have a common ancestor. George and James might be first cousins or more distantly related. I do not think they are brothers because James' parents were too young to have George in 1793. Harlow parish registers from this era do not survive.

BirthGeorge Cordell was born circa 1793 in Harlow, Essex.1

MarriageHe married Ann Tarling on 22 Mar 1817 in Harlow.
Information from the register: George Cordle, bachelor, Ann Tarling, spinster, both of this parish, married in the church by banns. They both signed the register with an X and the witnesses were William Read and Francis Newton (who was a frequent witness.)2
Research Note Their children were baptised in the Baptist Church.
1841 CensusGeorge and Ann Cordell appeared on the 1841 Census of Harlow, Essex, at Church Gate Street. The household included George (45 years old, Agricultural Labourer), Ann (45), George (20), James (16), Mary (13), Charles (9), Joseph (7), and William (5). All were born in Essex. Note that the 1841 census recorded ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years, did not record relationships, and only indicated whether or not the person was born in the county.3
1851 CensusGeorge and Ann Cordell appeared on the 1851 Census of Harlow, Essex, at Hobbs Cross Road. George was 58, an Agricultural Labourer, born in Harlow. Ann was 56, born in Halow. SOPHIA CORDELL . I work for Messrs. Levy and Moses- my husband's name is William. I had a bundle of cord to make into trousers - it was not cut out in the shape of trousers; the prisoner lodged in the two pair front room in the same house with me; her husband is a carpenter - this bundle had not been opened: I never saw it, but I missed one from ten or twelve bundles which I had.
ANN GRIFFITH. I am employed at the same work. On the 9th of June, in the afternoon, the prisoner came to me, and asked if I could make a pair of trousers - I said Yes; she said she would bring me some, and brought five pairs, but they were not cut out - I said, "You must work for some shop;" I made them into trousers.

Research Note
The parish registers were stolen from the Vestry Room in the night of 18 Aug 1814. They were in an Iron Chest in an inner closet under Lock & Key. They contained bmb 1560 [or 1569] to 1734; bapt and bur 1734 - 1813; marr 1734 - 1754; marr from 1734 [or 54]; marr to 1813; only one year was not present in 1680s; also new series beginning 1813. The next morning was called a meeting of parishioners and a reward offered. The registers were not recovered. A few records were collected from parishoners on 29 Mar 1816. Thus, any cited events that occurred prior to this date are from recollection and many events will not be recorded.
BirthJohn Cordell was born circa 1782 in Harlow, Essex.3

MarriageHe married Susanna (-?-).4

Research Note In the Church of England parish register are entries for the baptisms of their sons James, William, Charles, and Edward (all entered at one time - see citation note) the surname was spelled Caudel.
1841 CensusJohn and Susan Cordell appeared on the 1841 Census of Harlow, Essex, at Foster Street. John was 57 and an Agricultural Labourer. Susan was 61. Also in the household were Mary (20) and William (6 months). All were born in Essex. Note that the 1841 census records ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years, does not record relationships, and only indicates whether or not the person was born in the county.5
1851 CensusJohn and Susan Cordell appeared on the 1851 Census of Harlow, Essex, at Foster Street. John was 69, an agricultural labourer, and was born in Harlow. Susan was 72, birthplace Harlow. Research Note There is a record in the National Burial Index for John Cordell, age 64, buried 7 April 1865 in Potter Street Baptist Church in Harlow. His wife Susan was buried there in 1864 and I wonder if the age in the transcription should be 84, therefore this John Cordell.7
