Biography
John Malcolm of Red Deer is in the real estate and coal business and
he occupies a position of prominence among the foremost citizens of this
community. He was born on the 9th of March, 1869, in Ontario, a son
of Andrew and Sadie (Johnson) Malcolm, the former a native of Scotland
and the latter of near Boston, Massachusetts. Their marriage was cel-
ebrated in Gait, Ontario. For some time the father engaged in the com-
mission business in that province and in 1877 removed to Winnipeg,
Manitoba, where he operated a dairy and ranch for a time. In 1889 he
went to Dauphin and turned his entire time and attention to ranching.
Mrs. Malcolm died at the home in Dauphin in 1908. Mr. Malcolm con-
tinued to reside there for a time but subsequently returned to Gait, where
his demise occured in 1920. To Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm ten children were
born, seven of whom are living, John, whose name introduces this review,
being the second in order of birth. Throughout their lives Mr. and Mrs.
Malcolm attended the Presbyterian church, and the father gave his
political allegiance to the Liberal party. The success Mr. Malcolm achieved
was well-merited, for he was a self-made man in the truest sense of the
word, and he was held in high confidence and esteem by all who knew him.

In the acquirement of his education John Malcolm attended the public
schools of his birthplace and in due time was graduated from a high
school in Manitoba. He immediately entered the business world and for
six years clerked in a hardware store. He then came to Alberta and
became associated with the International Harvester Company, traveling
for them for some fourteen years. In 1911 he came to Red Deer and went
into the real estate and coal business and also does some insurance. He
has won well-merited success in his business ventures, for he is a man
of keen discrimination and foresight. He has an interest in the coal mines
in the Saunders creek district. In 1894 was celebrated the marriage of
Mr. Malcolm to Miss Christine McClain, a native of Bruce, Ontario, who
received her education there. To Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm five children have
been born : Roy A., who is now clerking in a store in Waterloo, Iowa, is
a veteran of the World war. He enlisted in the Winnipeg Highlanders
in 1915, serving with the rank of sergeant, and was overseas four years,
receiving his honorable discharge in 1919. He married Lois Ruthlidge;
Clifford J. Malcolm who is an inspector for the Aetna Fire Insurance
Company at Calgary, is also a veteran of the World war, having served
overseas with the "Fighting Tenth," and being in service from 1915 to
1919. He married Margaret Cadwell and they are parents of one son.
Jack; Howard is associated with the W. E. Lord Company of Red Deer;
(9)

Alberta is training to be a nurse; and Elva is a student in the local
schools.

In his political views Mr. Malcolm is a Liberal and he maintains an
active interest in party affairs, although he has never sought nor desired
political preferment. For some time he was a member of the city council.
His religious faith is manifest in his membership in the Presbyterian
church and he is a zealous worker in its behalf. He has been a member
of the church board for sixteen years and is now its chairman. Fraternally
he is identified with the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons and the Royal
Arch Masons and he has been treasurer of both. Mr. Malcolm is readily
conceded to be one of the progressive business men and highly esteemed
citizens of his community, where he is known to be a man of good prin-
ciples and honest business methods.12

ObituaryHis obituary was published on 16 Jun 1927 in the The Chilliwack Progress.

The death occurred on June 7th, after a lingering illness of four months, of William Denmark, aged 87 years.
Born in 1840, at Campbellford, Ontario, of British parents, who hewed their way into the forests of Ontario, he spent his youth on the farm of his father, marrying in 1862, Miss Georgina Dunham, eldest daughter of Dr. Dunham of Brockville, Ontario. Of a pioneering disposition, in the early '70's he left the old home and went west, working on the Dawson and C.P.R. surveys in the Lake of the Woods district. In 1880 he moved his family, consisting of wife and five children, to Winnipeg, the same year trekking 250 miles northwest of Winnipeg, to what was afterwards known as the Shell River district, where he and other new settlers surveyed or ran lines for their homesteads, the country only being surveyed into townships, and they settling on quarter, half or whole sections.
He took an active interest in the upbuilding of this new settlement, establishing the first post office with store in conjunction, which was a meeting place for the new settlers for miles around. When the settlement grew to the extent of being formed into a municipality, and when the town of Russell first came into existence, he acted as reeve, councillor and school trustee at various times.
In 1911 he moved to Chilliwack, B.C., and led a retiring life. A member of the Church of England, he was buried from St. Thomas' church, Chilliwack, on Wednesday, June 9, 1927.
The deceased is survived by three daughters, Mrs. E.B. Martin, Mrs. Percy Burton, and Mrs. Joseph Burton, all of Chilliwack; and one son, Capt. A.G. Denmark, M.D., of Shoal Lake, Manitoba; 11 grand children and 11 great grandchildren. His wife pre-deceased him in 1922.3

LARGE STRAWBERRIES
The largest and best strawberries grown in Chilliwack this year were grown and presented to the Progress staff, by the most thoughtful man in the valley, viz., Mr C G Bonnycastle of Williams Road.
The berries were of the Big Red Jumbo variety, red all the way through and the kind you have to cut in four pieces to get into your mouth. A little strawberry festival was held in the office one afternoon by the staff over a dozen of these delicious berries and the editor had enough left over for five-o'clock in the evening. This journal shall look upon Mr Bonnycastle as its best friend hereafter.22

Annual Meeting of Game Association
... Two matters of importance to the association were brought up at the annual meeting. One was that of Sunday shooting brought up by Mr C G Bonnycastle. Mr Bonnycastle suggested the petitioning of the game department to take steps to have the Sunday laws so amended that the authorities would be enabled to prevent the firing off of guns in and around inhabited communities. In the case of the uninhabited districts such as that of Sumas Prairie, he was not opposed to this shooting, but in and about a community where many were opposed to it, he thought it should be stopped. The concensus of opinion at the meeting was with Mr Bonnycastle in this but no definite action was taken ... election of officers included C G Bonnycastle to the executive committee.34

Get Fenian Raid Bounty
Last session an act entitled the "Fenian Raid Vounteer Bounty Act" was placed on the statute books of Canada. The act provided that the Dominion should show recognition of the services performed by patriotic Canadians who had taken part in the repelling of the Fenian raids of 1866 and 1870. It was estimated at that time that about 10,000 men took up arms in defence of the Dominion, but it has since been shown that a far larger number than that took the field, or showed a readiness to do so by answering to the muster call. Up to the end of 1913 34,050 applications for the $100 bounty were made. Of this number 16,470 had been paid and 3,045 refused...Included in the list paid are four residents of Chilliwack, namely: Messrs. C G Bonnycastle, J W Hill, Hector McKay and D T Nelems ...35

1906 CensusH E and Lyall Rudd appeared on the 1906 Census of Alberta, enumerated 3 Jul 1906. Their nearest post office was Sturgeonville. H E was 32, born in Ireland, immigration date unreadable, land description unreadable, and had 2 horses, 5? milk cows, and 7 cattle. Lyall was 29 and born in Ontario. Their children were Terence (3) and Sheila (1). Living with them was one servant (likely for farming.)10

1911 CensusH.E. and Mrs Rudd appeared on the 1911 Census of Edmonton, Alberta, at 375 Kirkness, enumerated 1 Jun 1911. The census for this family was quite bungled - awful handwriting and questionable names and data (such as the entire family born in Ontario). By the family structure and the correct bits, I am quite sure it is them...perhaps Hope and Sheila answered the enumerator's questions! Bert was 37, born May 1874 in Ontario, of Irish origin, Canadian, Anglican, [occupation unreadable] Provincial Government employee, working 52 weeks at 60 hours per week, wages in 1910 were $1000.
