Albertan May Enter Cabinet
Persistent rumors which, for obvious reasons, cannot be confirmed, are in circulation that the government may appoint James A McKinnon (Lib) member for Edmonton West, minister without portfolio, to give Alberta representation in the government. Ever since the general election of 1935, which left Alberta with only one Liberal member, Mr McKinnon, in parliament, and no voice in the government, the interests of that province largely have been attended to by Hon James G Gardiner, minister of agriculture, who has had a lifetime of political experience in neighboring Saskatchewan.
It has not only been a source of complaint from Alberta but one of weakness to the Alberta Liberal party that the foothill province lacks cabinet representation. The ability of the minister of agriculture in battling for western interests is unquestioned but some Albertans contend that political, geographical and economic conditions in Alberta are so different from those of Saskatchewan that more direct representation in the cabinet might help to adjust some of the difficulties.
The disagreements now evident in the opposition elements to the Aberhart government are a case in point. The Aberhart partisans have been making capital of allegations that Alberta is being governed by the political considerations of a neighboring province, and the appointment of an Albertan to the ministry, even without portfolio, would go far to removing the charge.
Mr McKinnon is a native of Port Elgin, Ont, born Oct 4, 1881, married June 28, 1911, to Irene Sharp of Summerside, PEI. The couple have one daughter. Mr McKinnon is managing director of the Edmonton firm bearing his name. A member of the Canadian Credit Men's Trust association, Edmonton, and a member of numerous clubs and civic organizations in the Alberta capital.6
