She was a widow, born July 31 1848 in rural Ontario, age 53, of Scotch origin, Presbyterian, and literate. She owned a 6 room brick house on half an acre. Her children still at home were Mary B (22), James A (19, school teacher), Alexander (16), Maggie T (16), and John F (12.)6 
1906 CensusMargaret McKinnon and her children appeared on the 1906 Census of Edmonton, Alberta, at 250 8th Street, enumerated 24 Jun 1906. Margaret was 56, a widow, born in Scotland, immigrated in 1870. Her children, all born in Ontario, were James (24), Bell (26), Alex (21), Margaret (21), and John (18.)7

Her father was Alexander Tolmie, mother Mary Fraser, both born in Scotland. Informant was her daughter Miss M.B. Mackinnon of the same address.1
