Hardin, or Howard, was the youngest child of John Keen and Elizabeth Jackson McCoy, born in 1853 in Perry County, Illinois. His reported age varied a lot in the census records. As was typical in that place and time, he was illiterate. And, like many others, he was a farm laborer then worked in the coal mines.
Howard married when he was about 20 years old and they had nine children. Howard died at the age of 62 from injuries sustained in a mine accident.
