BaptismHe was baptized on 1 May 1870 in St Saviour Southwark, Surrey. The register noted that he was born 6 April 1870 and was the son of Thomas Joseph, engineer, & Emma Martin Cox of Lambeth. He was baptised the same day as his 10-year old brother Charles.1

1901 CensusRichard and Esther Cox appeared on the 1901 Census of Deptford, London, at 26 Haydock Road, enumerated 31 Mar 1901. Two families lived at this address, each occupying four rooms. Richard was 30, employed as a shirt cutter, and was born in Blackfriars, London. Esther was 28, worked as a shirt collar maker, and was born in Rotherhithe, London. With them was their daughter Esther, age 5.6 
1911 CensusRichard and Esther Cox appeared on the 1911 Census of Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, at 12 Lonsdale Road. Richard was 41, a shirt cutter for a shirt manufacurers, and was born in Surrey London. Esther was 39 and also born in Surrey. They had been married 16 years and Esther was the mother of 3 children, all still living. With them in their four room house were their children Esther (15, shirt maker), Hilda (5), Richard (1), as well as one boarder (24, shirt ironer.)7 
(Widowed) DeathHis wife Esther died on 27 Jan 1958 in in Nottingham.8
