Thomas was born and baptised in Southwark, Surrey in 1835. He was the eldest of 8 children and his father was a clerk to a timber merchant. Thomas was mechanical - at the time of his marriage at the age of 21, he was a mathematical instrument maker. Later he was a sewing machine engineer. He and his wife Emma lived in Lambeth and Battersea and there raised nine children. The eldest two boys emigrated to Australia and the eldest daughter emigrated to Canada. Not all the children have been traced yet - Cox is a common name.

(with Parents) 1841 CensusHe appeared on the 1841 Census of Christ Church Southwark, Surrey in the household of his parents. He was 6, born in the county of Surrey, and the eldest of four children.6 
1851 CensusThos Cox appeared on the 1851 Census of Bethnal Green, Middlesex, at 23 Church Street. He was age 15, born in Southwark, and was an errand boy in the household of a cheesemonger. Four younger brothers still lived at home. [There is the possibility that this is the wrong Thomas Cox, but he was not with his parents in the 1851 census and the age and birthplace fit].7 
MarriageHe married Emma Martin Stocker, daughter of William Stocker and Susannah Hitt, on 5 Oct 1856 in St John's Church, Lambeth, Surrey.

1861 CensusThomas J and Emma M Cox appeared on the 1861 Census of Christchurch, Surrey, at 9 York Street. Three families lived at this address. Thomas was 26, a Mathematical Instrument Maker, and was born in Southwark, Surrey. Emma was 22 and born in Exeter, Devon. Their children were Thomas (3), Emma (2), and Charles (10? months.)9 
1871 CensusThomas and Emma appeared on the 1871 Census of Southwark, Surrey, at 27 Great Charlotte Street. Thomas was 35, a Machinist, and was born in Southwark. Emma was 31 and born in Exeter, Devon. Their five children were Thomas (14), Emma (13), Charles (11), William (5), and Richard (1). The oldest four attended school.10 
(Witness) Marriage Thomas Joseph Cox witnessed the marriage of John Wright and his daughter Emma Mary Susanna Cox on 19 Dec 1880 in St. Peter's Church, Battersea, Surrey.11,12

1881 CensusThomas J and Emma M Cox appeared on the 1881 Census of Battersea, Surrey, at 11 Meyrick Road. Thomas was 45, a Sewing Machine Engineer, and born in Southwark, Surrey. Emma was 42 and born in Exeter, Devon. Their children were William (15), Richard (10), Joseph (8), John (7), Pheobe [sic] (3), and Alfred (9 months). Also with them was Thomas' mother-in-law Susannah Stocker, a 67-year old widow.5 
1891 CensusThomas and Emma appeared on the 1891 Census of Battersea, London, at 11 Meyrick Road. Thomas was 55, employed as a Sewing Machine Engineer, and was born in Southwark Surrey. Emma was 53 and born in Exeter Devon. Emma's mother Susanah Stocker lived with them. Their children at home were Richard (20, shirt cutter), Joseph (18, potter), Phoebe (13, scholar), Alfred (10, scholar), and John (7.)3

1901 CensusThomas appeared on the 1901 Census of Battersea, London, at 17 Meyrick Rd. He was 66, widowed, worked as an Engineers Fitter, and was born in Southwark London. At home were John (26, tailor), Phoebe (22, dressmaker), and Alfred (19, machine minder). His daughter Emma and family lived at number 15 Meyrick Road.15 
(Admon) ProbateThomas Joseph Cox, engineer's-machinist, was granted administration of his wife Emma's estate on 13 Mar 1906.14 
1911 CensusThomas J Cox and his son John Cox appeared on the 1911 Census of Wandsworth, London, at 38 Littleton Street. Thomas was 77, a widower, retired engineer in the sewing machine industry, and was born in Southwark London. John was 35, single, a tailor, born in Battersea London.16 
DeathThomas died after 1911.
