On her baptism record Emma's middle name is spelled Martyn but elsewhere it is Martin - very likely a family name. She was born in 1839 in Exeter, Devon and had one sister who was 9 years her senior. Her father was a bricklayer. Emma lived her adult life in the county of Surrey. At the age of 17 (although the certificate said she was of full age), she married Thomas Joseph Cox and they had their first child seven months later. They had nine known children. The eldest two boys emigrated to Australia and the eldest daughter to Canada.
