The family (Arthur & Bonnycastle E with children Edward Bonnycastle, Helen Mary, Archibald Collier, and Isabel Ainee) arrived aboard the Empress of Japan which had traveled from Hong Kong, Shanghai, Nagasaki, Kobe, Yokohama with Canadian Pacific Ocean Services Ltd. The London Times reported the death. "On Nov. 29, 1948, very suddenly, at Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Arthur Mayne, I.C.S. (Retd), aged 79 years."11
